I'm just a sweet transvestite

Happy Halloween! AMC is playing Halloween movies all day. I am in heaven. Working from home gets pretty lonely so I keep a small tv on for background noise. The beauty that is Tivo lets me pause or mute whatever is on when my phone rings so I can give my work my full attention. I turned the current Halloween movie on just as the little girl was picking out her clown costume and that got me thinking about about my Halloween Costumes over the years. Some I remember very well, other's escape me. I know that I was C3P0 in 4th grade, I remember how cool I though my costume was (in retrospect it may have been the beginning of geekdom). I know that I was Wonder Woman, and Isis. I was Raggedy Ann (my Mom made a killer costume) and Dorothy the year Kaeleigh was Glinda. Jen and I spent several hours one night spinning my hair into Aquanet soaked twirls that produced the coolest Medusa hair ever.

And once... I was Batman.

When I was young my Nan bought our costumes every year. We told her what we wanted to be and she went out and bought the box costume for us. Plastic face, one piece outfit, usually with a belt or cape or some other small accessories. They were so cool, I remember stacks and stacks of boxes at Kmart or Two Guys. Looking through them one after the other. In first grade I wanted to be Batgirl. I told my Mom that was the costume I wanted and my Mom in turn told my Nan. Unfortunately either they were out of Batgirl, or my grandmother got confused and I ended up with a box that read Batman. I was mortified, but I wore it. I can vividly picture walking around classroom to classroom of Lindenwold #4 schools Halloween parade (inside) with my hands covering my earrings so nobody would know that I was a girl. It never occurred to me to take the earrings off.

I leave you today with Sweet Transvestite from Rocky Horror Picture Show. I fell in love with Tim Curry during this scene. So brazen, rocking the makeup like nothing I had ever seen. I wish I'd had the guts in first grade to just suck it up and be a badass Batman, but what do 6 year olds know?
Happy Halloween my friends.

I was never allowed to get those boxed costumes. My mother sewed elaborite outfits. I was a queen, complete with a velvet cape, a Mini Mouse, a witch and a football player. What is it with the girls in our family wearing boy costumes?

Who's "Dr. Regina Falangie?"

Ohhh... I remember one day when we lived in Marlton. You were playing the Rocky Horror soundtrack (on cassette) and "Sweet Transvestite" came on. Mom turned to you and said, "I think this is a little inappropriate!" and pointed at me. I must have been about 10 years old and had no idea what a transvestite was, but I remember being completely intrigued and secretly listened to that tape sooo many times. When I finally saw the movie years later, this immediately became my very favorite scene :D
